Radio Shows

on MP3 CDs

Isn't it great!

Do you enjoy listening to Radio Shows and OTR (Old Time Radio)?

Certainly US Radio Shows led the world in the 40's and early 50's both in terms of dramatic worth, orchestrations (thanks to sizeable budgets) and sound effects. The adventure shows in particular have an effect of "transporting one to the centre of the action in far & exotic places, through the theatre of the mind".

But a lot of these classic shows were stored on double-sided LPs and quite a few have not been preserved - fortunately, OTRR (The Old Time Radio Researchers Group) have worked tirelessly in seeking out & cataloguing those shows still left in existence.

Australian Radio (that which I was brought up upon) reached its zenith in the 1950's mainly because of TV's comparatively late arrival to this country. The 1950's technology which embraced recording tape (rather than vinyl), buoyed by good size budgets and talented performers allowed Australian radio and in particular their 15 minute serials to flourish

Meanwhile the BBC and UK Radio in general have continued to produce top quality radio drama right up until today. In particular their Sci-Fi & Detective Mysteries offerings have all been of the highest quality.

Where do I fit in?

As an Australian, raised in pre-TV days, I listened to everything that my parents allowed (especially Captain Silver of the Sea Hound). Perhaps like everyone else, I was won over to TV when it arrived in our home (I was 10 years old)

A few years ago, a medical condition resulted in my ability to concentrate properly becoming significantly impaired. By way of recovery, I discovered the delights of US Radio Adventure Shows and UK Sci-Fi Shows and I was hooked. Now I've become am an avid listener who enjoys his "daily dose of magic". In the last few years, I have collected, worked on and listened to some great shows - shows that I would like to share with you free of charge (subject to certain conditions* - see below)

OTR and the MP3 Format

The advent of the MP3 format, the ubiquitous DVD player and the proliferation of portable MP3 players (esp the iPod & iTunes) has opened the door to the convenient listening & appreciation of these great radio dramas.

DVD players can play CDs encoded with the MP3 format and this allows for up to 35 thirty minute radio shows on a single CD (instead of the usual 2 shows!) - all with great sound quality - ah, the marvels of modern technology.

If you've ever wondered about how to play .mp3 formatted CDs on your DVD player, check out the MP3 CD Directions below.

Working in tandem with the mp3 format, is advanced computer audio software, which allows for the repair and improvement of the original source. In many cases shows have been upgrading to an extent that they have now become "quite listenable" (although one still can't get a silk purse out of a sow's ear)

But whilst we may be opening a whole new world of listening enjoyment, some complications have come along for the ride:

á      in the process of converting to the .mp3 format, a lot of preserved shows have become mislabelled and duplicated

á      often, not a lot of time has been put into restoring the sound quality

á      problems occur when inexperienced hands do the mp3 conversion process - this is not a straightforward procedure and if not carefully monitored, can lead to poor sound reproduction

What makes my collection different from those of others?

How many points, below can I begin with an "I"?

  1. I have a narrow focus of shows that interest me - this allows me the time to chase down individual episodes from "old salts" who have stored the original LPs on reel to reel tapes. Consequently, the sound quality is good and the sets of shows are complete

  1. I have extensively used the OTRR database (esp the First Line project) to correctly identify each individual episode, thereby eliminating mislabelled and duplicate episodes

  1. I have become a reasonably "dab hand" with the computer software program SountrackPro (thanx to my software engineer son) - this allows me to edit out "no-sound" and "insert-commercial-here music" interludes, as well as improve the overall sound quality of each episodes - it takes ages but I am principally doing it for my own listening pleasure and as I've said above: I do have a narrow focus. If you'd like to read further about my methods click on this link: Methods Used in Restoring OTR

  1. I have also become proficient with the computer software programs: MP3Rage & LameBrain (again thanx to my software engineer son) - this allows me to fully customise & closely monitor the vital step of conversion to mp3 format and the setting up of appropriate (ID3) identifier tags. This ensures that all of my work in preparing the radio shows for an enjoyable listening experience will not be lost through a "rough-house" compression or identifier process.

  1. My OTR CDs come fully labelled - full color original artwork on the CD disc(s) itself and on the case insert - yes, they come in a case! - and, just like my DVD sets, they make a nice "bookshelf" item! - see picture below. Also included is a laminated information card containing a history of the particular radio show as well a contents section for the enclosed CD(s)

  1. Its free (subject to certain conditions* - see below). I subscribe to the OTRR creed that OTR should be free to all. Even though I spent money on (or swapped DVD sets for) OTR tapes, it was done primarily for my own listening pleasure and because I wanted complete sets of episodes.

Please realize that I have never sold nor will I ever sell OTR. As such if you don't qualify for free OTR then I cannot provide it under any other circumstances (paid or otherwise)

*Free? - but what are the "certain conditions"

Simply put:

For any order with a total of at least US$50 or UK£25 (International customers), AU$50 (Australian customers) then please feel free to select one OTR title from the list below - it will be provided gratis and be included along with the order

Note that this provision is regardless of the number of CDs comprising the title - you get the entire title as listed, including case, artwork and laminated card (as per picture above)

Please realize that such provision is "a good faith gesture" and it is expected that it will be taken up "in the spirit in which it is offered"

 - ie. please don't deliberately split orders so as to obtain more free OTR
