Tales of the Texas

Tales of the Texas Rangers, starring Joel
McCrea as Ranger Pearson! Texas, more than 260 thousand square miles! And 50 men who make up the most famous and
oldest law enforcement body in North America! A
30 minute stand-alone series, Tales of the Texas Rangers premiered on 8th July 1950 to great acclaim. It
came from an idea developed and carefully researched by Stacy Keach, who had joined the legendary 30 year Texas Ranger
veteran Capt. M. T. "Lone Wolf" Gonzaullas on a number of fact-finding case investigations.
Whilst the show was an anthology series, there would be a single ranger
hero, Jace Pearson who would solve modern day cases, using an
automobile with a horse trailer attached at back (housing his horse Charcoal). The
casting of Jace Pearson would be
inspired: Joel McCrea - a well
known screen actor who was now primarily appearing in western movies. Most
episodes were action/who-dun-its with the adventure of Texas thrown in and
concluding with McCrea giving interesting details about ranger lore. Now
to that which has survived as well as some Log comments: In
all, 95 episodes were broadcast - these included 4 repeat programs (The
White Elephant, Play for Keeps, Open and Shut & Dead Give-away).
Luckily only 4 episodes have been lost (Nos. 1, 16, 29 & 41). This leaves
a total of 87 surviving (& different) episodes - not counting repeats.
Additionally there was a surviving Audition Episode which was broadcast on 13th April 1950 -
3 months before the commencement of the series proper. This episode was
titled Just a Number and did not
have Joel McCrea as Jace
Pearson - that role was voiced by Frank
Martin for this single episode
which was then shopped around the various advertising agencies. Wheaties came on board as sponsor but only for the first 8
episodes. The remaining episodes
were "sustaining" and ran without sponsor. According
to Otter, the script for Audition Episode (Just a Number) was used for the first episode of the series proper which premiered
on 8th July 1950 - unfortunately this is one of the 4 episodes
which have been lost. The
first surviving episode is July 15th's The White Elephant - however as it was sponsored by Wheaties, and their "add spots" required the
deletion of over two minutes of program content. As such the repeat broadcast
of The White Elephant (28th
October 1951) has been included in the main grouping below - it runs for the
full 28 minutes. In cases of
other repeat programs, the first occurrence of that program has been included
in the main grouping (since there was no sponsor for the original or repeat
broadcast and as such issues of deleted program content are not a
factor). The repeat programs not
included in the main grouping are, however included in the Repeat Episodes section (see below) For
those of you that are sticklers for log accuracy etc, please allow the
following Otter-related comments: I
believe that the Otter log is incorrect in two places: (i) there is no
program listing (titled or otherwise) for 23rd March 1952 and (ii)
I feel that the supposed original airing of the episode Night Chase (28th January 1951), did not occur. I
think that a different (unknown title & now lost) episode was broadcast
on that date. Both of these assertions are confirmed by other non-Otter logs
(Jerry Haendiges & Frank Passage) Note
that all episodes have come from original transcription discs and have been
digitally enhanced & remastered (with NO HISS) by your truly using the
very latest software - bit rates of 256 and eventually 128 were used throughout
the entire process Want

episode can be freely downloaded to your computer - just right button click
on any link below and chose "Download Linked File" (or words to
that effect). The file is on an average about 25Mb - download time will
depend on your (broadband) speed These
3 MP3 CDs contains all 87 surviving episodes of Tales of the Texas Rangers
(repeats have not been included here in this main grouping) plus the Audition
Episode as well as a separate grouping of the 4 repeated episodes (which
aren't included in the main grouping): A.
