Tarzan, Lord of the
Jungle |
|
"From the heart of the Jungle comes a
savage cry of victory! This is Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle! From the black core of dark Africa, land of
enchantment, mystery and violence, comes one of the most colourful figures of
all time, transcribed from the immortal pen of Edgar Rice Burroughs - Tarzan,
the bronzed white son of the jungle And now in the very words of Mr Burroughs, the
story of:" Edgar
Rice Burroughs' "Tarzan"
first appeared on radio on September 12, 1932 in a syndicated serial that
lasted for 286 episodes. Burroughs then produced his own 39 episode Tarzan
radio serial, Tarzan and the Diamond of Asher in 1934
followed two years later by a further 39 episode adventure titled Tarzan
and the Fires of Tohr. These
latter two serials are the subject of a separate listing: Tarzan: The
Radio Serials The
radio listening audience had to wait until 1951 to again hear the adventures
of Tarzan when the Mutual Don-Lee network broadcast the Tarzan, Lord of
the Jungle series. This Commodore
series was first broadcast from 11th January 1951, one year after the death
of Edgar Rice Burroughs. It consisted of 75 stand-alone, 30 minute episodes
and starred Lamont Johnson as
Tarzan. These
were tales of ivory poachers, gold thieves, hijackers and battles with
cannibalistic natives, all told against a backdrop of fabulous music and
great sound effects. They were very polished productions who owed a lot of
their dramatic flair to the "speaking-presence" of Lamont Johnson. Rebroadcasts
of this series on the CBS Network during 1952 & 1953 resulted in the
program reaching the Top 10. From this lofty perch, it was cancelled - due to
