Paul Temple |
|
One of the most popular
private detectives of all time, Paul Temple was a popular British private detective who made
his first appearance in a BBC radio serial in 1938 and went on to appear in
novels, film, television and even a daily comic strip. On radio for an
incredible thirty-year run, Paul Temple was originally broadcast on the BBC
Light Programme and then around the world with the result that, even now, the
character has fans all over the world. Paul Temple is a crime
writer turned private eye, who is frequently "sent for" by Scotland
Yard to help out. Aiding him in his investigations are his wife, Steve, and Sir Graham Forbes of Scotland Yard. The stories themselves are often quite
suspenseful, and the radio serials were full of cliffhanger endings. The
stories were the creation of Francis Durbridge who scripted the BBC productions. Paul Temple was played
(amongst others) by Barry Morse
(of "The Fugitive" TV series) but mostly (and most popularly) by Peter
Coke. Marjorie Westbury took over the role of Paul's wife, Steve in the
fifth serial and played the part in every serial to the last in 1968. Although the early radio
serials and shows are lost, ten serials have survived. In 2006 BBC4 broadcast a
brand new production of one of the missing Temples - the ninth series, Paul
Temple and the Sullivan Mystery,
with Crawford Logan and Gerda
Stevenson as Paul and Steve. Using
vintage microphones and sound effects, and much of the original incidental
music, the production was as far as possible a technical and stylistic
replica of how the 1947 original might have sounded if its recording had
survived. It proved enormously popular with the audience on Radio 4, and
subsequently on Radio 7, with hundreds of letters, e-mails and phone calls. A
second revival in 2008 (this time of Paul Temple and the Madison Mystery) proved equally popular. So, after another gap of
two years, a third re-enactment of a missing Paul Temple mystery premiered on
BBC4 in June 2010. This time Paul Temple and Steve, first broadcast in 1947, was revived. As with the
other two re-enactments Crawford Logan and Gerda Stevenson
play Paul and Steve. (Note that there was also a Paul
Temple Movies Series and a Paul
Temple TV Series - they are available in the Movie
Series and TV Series sections of this website) Want to check this great
