Miss Marple

Jane Marple, usually known as Miss Marple, is a fictional character appearing in twelve of Agatha Christie's crime novels (and several short stories). Miss Marple is an elderly spinster who acts as an amateur detective, and lives in the village of St. Mary Mead. She looks like an ordinary old lady, dressed neatly in tweed and is frequently seen knitting or pulling weeds in her garden. Miss Marple sometimes comes across as confused but when it comes to solving mysteries, she has a sharp logical mind, and an almost unmatched understanding of human nature with all its weaknesses, strengths, quirks and foibles. In the detective story tradition, she often embarrasses the local "professional" police by solving mysteries that have them stumped. Although she looks like a sweet, frail old woman, Miss Marple is not afraid of dead bodies and is not easily intimidated. She also has a remarkable ability to latch onto a casual comment and connect it to the case at hand.

Her first appearance in a full-length novel was in The Murder at the Vicarage in 1930.

Nemesis was to be the final Miss Marple novel in 1971, although Sleeping Murder which Christie wrote in 1940 was not published until shortly after Christie's death in 1976. Sleeping Murder was actually written as a concluding novel to the Marple series - Christie locked it away in a bank vault so it would be safe if she was killed in The Blitz. Because the novel was not published until some thirty-six years after it was originally written certain characters who were killed off by Christie in post WWII Miss Marple novels are still alive in Sleeping Murder!

From 1993 through to 2001 BBC Radio dramatized all 12 Miss Marple novels.

All stories feature noted British film & TV actor June Whitfield as Miss Jane Marple, and were dramatised by Michael Bakewell and directed by Enyd Williams.

ACMMRD_1999-06-01 The Wisdom of Miss Marple.mp3

These two MP3 CDs consist of all 12 BBC Miss Marple dramatizations: the 90 minute presentations have been broken in 3 parters with individual lengths between 25 and 35 minutes. The "breaks" have been chosen in a sympathetic way and coincide with scene changes. Each part has been "topped and tailed" with the appropriate introduction and conclusion so that the resulting 3 parters play just like the 5 parter continuing mysteries.

Also included is a 30 minute documentary titled The Wisdom of Miss Marple in which Professor Jeffrey Richards discusses Miss Marple on Radio, TV and film.

Rounding out this excellent collection another excellent 1990 documentary A Close-Up of Agatha Christie
