Mark Trail

Battling the raging elements!

Fighting the savage wilderness!

Striking at the enemies of man and nature!

One man's name resounds from snow capped mountains down across the sun-baked plains!

Maaaaarrrrrrkkkk Trail!

A Sunday comics section feature conceived by Ed Dodd, Mark Trail was a pipe-smoking, dark haired forest ranger who loved nature and told of its wonders. The strip was a great way for city kids to learn something about the big woods. For example, kids learned about the tracks of animals, and what they did in the winter when there was no food.

As brought to radio on Mutual by Kellogg's Pep cereal, the Mark Trail of radio was more an "eco-warrior". Director Drexel Hines made action-hero Mark into a forest ranger who patrolled the wilderness ready to stop baddies while teaching his pals Scotty and Cherry about nature, all wrapped up in an exciting, action-packed radio show.

Mark Trail was well played by Matt Crowley who had previously spent many years in the role of Jungle Jim.

Mark Trail's adventures were good, intelligent fun, and probably gave many future nature lovers one of their first chances to get excited about wild America.

Initially stand-alone 30 minute adventures were broadcast 3 times a week from January 1950 until June 1951. A series of 15 minute continuing episodes were produced in 1952 (without Matt Crowley). As very few episodes of this latter series have survived, they have not been included here. However 35 episodes of the 30 minute stand-alone series are available and comprise the contents this MP3 CD
