Escape |
|
Through the stirring notes
of Moussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain comes the gripping voice of William Conrad booming out over the airwaves: Tired of the everyday grind? Ever dream of a life of romantic
adventure? Want to get away from it all? We offer you - ESCAPE! ESCAPE: designed to free you from the four
walls of today for a half hour of high adventure! Escape was heard on CBS from July 1947 to September
1954. There were two pilot shows
before the series proper began: The anthology program: Out Of This World featured "Dead of Night" on February 28, 1947. This show was repeated as Escape on March 21 before the normal series began with
Rudyard Kipling's The Man Who Would Be King on 7th July. Escape featured spine-tingling escapist adventure tales
from such masters as Joseph Conrad
(The Brute & Typhoon), Arthur Conan Doyle (The Lost Special & The Ring of Thoth), Edgar
Allen Poe (Fall Of The House Of
Usher), Roald Dahl (Poison), Alexandre
Dumas (The Second Shot), F.
Scott Fitzgerald (The Diamond as
Big as The Ritz), H. Rider Haggard
(She), W. Somerset Maugham (The
Out Station &The Vessel of Wrath), Robert Louis Stevenson (The Sire de Maletroit's Door & The Young Man
with the Cream Tarts), Percival Wren (Beau Geste) & H. G. Wells (Country of the Blind, Dream of Armegeddon, The Man Who Could Work
Miracles & The Time Machine). Modern authors also
featured extensively across a broad range of genres including: Eric Ambler (Journey into Fear), Ray Bradbury (The Earthmen, Mars is Heaven & Zero Hour), Graham
Greene (Confidential Agent &
Orient Express), Geoffrey Household
(The Fortune of Vargas, A Rough Shoot, & Taboo), Hammond Innes (Killer Mine), Jack London (The Scarlet Plague), Richard Connell (The Most Dangerous Game) and Harry Rieseberg (Port Royal). Escape also provided first time productions of what were
to prove legendary radio adaptations: Three Skeleton Key, An Occurrence at
Owl Creek Bridge, Leinengen vs. the Ants, A Shipment of Mute Fate &
Evening Primrose It was produced by William
N. Robeson (later Norman McDonald)
and featured many seasoned radio actors: Jack Webb, William Conrad, Paul
Frees, Jay Novello, Jeff Corey & Harry Bartell With a deft mixture of
classic and contemporary tales combined with solid scripts, excellent acting
and high production values, Escape
is remembered as one of the very best radio action/adventure series. During
parts of the series, the broadcast day was different on the East and West
Coast. Although the same scripts
were used for both east and west cost shows, there was one big difference:
the west coast versions used organ music in place of the full orchestra of
the east coast versions. In all there are 182
different stories from the series proper which have survived and they are
included here on this 4 CD set - repeat programs aren't counted (in the 182)
and nor are they included - in cases where East and West Coast versions of
the same show were available, preference was given the East Coast (ie
orchestra) editions. However in 34 programs,
organ music is used (as the corresponding orchestra version hasn't survived).
The single episodes (1948-03-06 The Grove of Ashtaroff & 1953-10-11
Elementals), a run of 15 episodes (from 1948-07-04 A Tooth for Paul Revere to
1949-04-23 The Great Impersonation, inclusive) and a further sequence of 17
episodes (from 1950-04-07 Ambassador of Poker to 1950-08-25 Crossing Paris,
inclusive) have the organ. With repeat broadcasts preference was given to the
earlier treatment but in a few cases, later ones were chosen because of a
better base sound quality. All episodes have been
carefully restored to very nice clarity however 2 episodes are a bit less so
(but still quite "listenable"): 1950-03-31 Green Splotches &
1953-01-18 A Matter of Conscience. In 1977 an attempted resurrection
(reinvention?) of Escape
occurred with the broadcast of new version of a previously lost episode from
1953: The Blue Room This was a one-off which
didn't take-off. It is included here along with the two Audition programs. Want
to check out an episode? - why not "taste & try"? The
episode available for download below is a beauty! - from the pen of Geoffrey
Household (he also wrote Rogue
Male) comes The Fortune of
Vargas, an exciting piece of
escapism complete with exotic locales, wild action and a savage denouement
- and starring Hollywood actor
Victor Mature This
episode can be freely downloaded to your computer - just right button click
on any link below and chose "Download Linked File" (or words to
that effect). The file is on an average about 21Mb - download time will
depend on your (broadband) speed ESC_1949-09-21
