Cloak and Dagger

"Are you willing to undertake a dangerous mission for the United States,

knowing in advance that you may never return alive?"

What you have just heard is a question asked during the War, of agents of the O.S.S.

Ordinary citizens who to this question answered: Yes!

Based on the 1945 book of the same name by Colonel Corey Ford and Alistair MacBain, Cloak and Dagger was the story of the wartime activities of the O.S.S. - The Office of Strategic Service (forerunner of the CIA) - "this country's first all-out effort in black warfare, dropping undercover operators behind enemy lines, organising local resistance to blow up bridges and dynamite tunnels, operating the best spy systems of Europe and Asia"

A tense half hour anthology series with patriots and traitors, love affairs doomed by war, triumph, tragedy and failure - a gripping show with every story an unpredictable departure from formula.

The book also spawned two 1946 films, namely O.S.S. (with Alan Ladd) and Cloak and Dagger (with Gary Cooper) - both of these films are available on DVD from the Adventure, Drama & Film Noir section of this website.

The two films were made also dramatized for radio via the Lux Radio Theatre - O.S.S. with Alan Ladd and Geraldine Fitzgerald recreating their film roles - Cloak and Dagger with Ronald Reagan (replacing Gary Copper) and Lilli Palmer duplicating her film role.

Further in 1950, Alan Ladd and Wanda Hendrix filmed Captain Carey, U.S.A. in which Ladd returns to Orta, near Milan, to find out who betrayed his World War II O.S.S. team and caused the death of several villagers. This film was also the subject of a Lux Radio Theatre dramatization in 1953 with Wanda Hendrix recreating her film role but with Charlton Heston replacing Alan Ladd.
