The Adventures of Captain
Silver and the Sea Hound (Australian Serial) |
|
Sea Hound, ahoy! Sea Hound, ahoy! Ding-Ding É Ding-Ding (Crashing Waves) The Adventures of Captain Silver and the Sea
Hound! Captain Silver, calling the Sea Hound É
Captain Silver calling the Sea Hound Come-in Sea Hound! Captain
Silver was the owner and skipper of
the 80 foot ketch "Sea Hound":
master mariner, adventurer and powerful foe of the forces of evil which
existed in the countries bordering the South Eastern Pacific. With a crew
comprising powerful side-kick Tex,
chinese scientist/philosopher Kukai
and youthful 14 year old ward, Jerry, The Sea Hound was initially a radio series which played in the US
during the war years, which begat an interesting series of comic books and,
in 1947 an excellent movie serial, The Sea Hound starring Buster "Flash Gordon" Crabbe (which is available from the Movie Serials section
of this website). When the deeds of Captain Silver appeared on the big screen
here in Australia (and especially in re-release in the mid 1950s) the
character move to the airwaves in a fabulous 15 minute continuing series
which ran for a number of years. TV
didn't start in Australia until late 1957 and so radio remained "big
entertainment" through most of the 1950s due mainly to the technology of
the tape recorder. Great sound effects and full production orchestra music,
made for exciting listening for both children and adults. Whilst
Australian radio 15 minute serial staples: Tarzan, Hop Harrigan, Rocky
Starr, Superman etc crossed the
"demographic lines" by playing between 6pm and 7pm on weeknights, The
Adventures of Captain Silver and the Sea Hound was designed for kids only and played at 5pm to an
adoring youthful audience which included yours truly, Trev who regarded it as
his favourite radio program. Yep,
5pm Monday to Thursday on Newcastle
radio station 2NX found Trev
with his ear glued to the wireless. He even constructed a "cardboard
box" theatre with plastic people, boats, planes etc so that he could
"act-out" each days adventure for his bemused parents. 5:30pm often
found Trev twiddling with the wireless aerial in an effort to tune in sister
station 2NM in far off Muswellbrook
for another dose of adventure. Leonard
Teale (who went onto significant
success with Australian TV's Homicide) and who had been the voice of Superman for 1040 episodes and 5 years through to 1954,
played Captain Silver with all
the power one had come to expect from this wonderful radio actor. The
Adventures of Captain Silver and the Sea Hound was developed from original Australian scripts and
ran for many years albeit with a slightly varying roster of characters. Jerry
left a life at sea to return to school and was replaced by the equally young,
keen and over-enthusiastic Ross
(with dog, King). A deckhand in
the form of the raw boned Cassidy
was also introduced. Unfortunately
a lot of this great series has not survived, however 3 complete adventures do
exist as well as a 4th with the first few episodes missing. Trev
has carefully compiled and restored this: his favourite radio series which
embody his first radio memories. The
first (surviving) story, Adventure in Montevideo finds our heroes arriving in this port city of Uruguay
in South America. They soon find themselves involved in an intriguing battle
with the evil El Guido who is trying to overthrow the local government with
his bandit supporters. Having
solved that problem, they then set sail for Rawson, Argentina but along the
way find themselves pitched into a Cold War stand-off in the Disabled
Foreign Submarine adventure. No
sooner have Captain Silver and his crew survived that adventure when they
find themselves in the dense Peruvian jungle trying to find a missing team of
anthropologists who were on the trail of a lost tribe of Mayans who had left
Mexico hundreds of years before and headed South. This fabulous 3rd
adventure is titled The Lost Tribe. The
4th surviving adventure, Voodoo Vengeance is the one with its first three episodes missing -
but luckily its easy to pick up the action É Travelling
to Port-au-Prince in Haiti, Captain Silver, Tex, Ross, Cassidy & Prince
welcome a local called Frantaga aboard the Sea Hound but almost immediately
he mysteriously dies before he can fully warn the Captain about the fabled
"White Witch Doctor" supposedly located in the Hills of the
Hidden Drums. They roust out local
gendarme Sgt Perre and head to
the Hills before coming across the evil and treacherous Gaboret. We pick up the action in Episode No. 4 with the
tragic death of the Sergeant in circumstances similar to Frantaga and our
heroes now alone in an extremely dangerous area of South America. Want
