His specialty was making
fools of the police, a simple task with Inspector Faraday heading the official investigation. The Boston
Blackie Radio Show began its life
when it filled in for Amos 'n' Andy in the summer of '44. Chester Morris, the star of the popular Boston Blackie movie
series, portrayed Blackie in 13 shows between June and September of 1944. Later, in April 1945 a
regular series began but with Richard Kollmar now playing Blackie. The show played on the Mutual
broadcasting network through till 1950. Blackie is the criminal-type gone
good. His pal from the force, Officer Faraday was played by Maurice Tarplin,
later Richard Lane (from the
Movie Series) or Frank Orth
(from the TV Series). Blackie has a wisecracking pal, Shorty (Tony Barrett),
who works the crime angles, too. And Blackie maintains a network of city
denizens that help him in a pinch. Faraday's great at showing up sooner or
later as the caper develops. "I can crack this case wide open, if
you'll only listen to me,"
is Blackie's constant lament to the hard-headed, do-it-by-the-book Faraday.
All the same, it's good to have a cop around when you need one. The smart,
and witty Mary, (played by Lesley Woods, then Jan Miner) is Blackie's gal friday. Want
